B - GROUP EQUIPMENT

In addition to the personal equipment needed by each individual, certain items are shared by the group.
These include such things as canoes, tents, cooking gear, axes. Here again it is important to take only what will be needed and to pack it so that it can be carried with the least discomfort.

To save weight on portages, the crew for each canoe should consist of three individuals, wherever possible. From two to seven crews will comprise a group which will travel, camp and cook together. Larger groups are undesirable because of the increased difficulty in finding a camp site sufficiently big, as well as the delay on portages where there may only be room to unload or load one or two canoes at a time. On the
other hand, it is wise always to have at least two canoes in a group, in case one of them should be in danger or damaged during the trip. The following list indicates the equipment that would be used by a group when:

a. Cruising

__Canoes (17-foot aluminum)
__Paddles (2 per canoe, minimum and 2 extra
     in the group3
__Canoe repair kit (in commissary box)
__Life Preservers (2 per canoe)
__Map of area (1 per canoe and
     waterproofed)
