6. Keeping Regular

The change in daily habits, in food and particularly in the water you drink may tend to make you constipated. This can spoil your fun. Make a fixed habit of elimination at the same time every day, right after breakfast is one convenient moment.

The prunes, apricots and other fruit you eat will have a laxative effect. Eat more of them if you need to overcome constipation, less of them if the reverse is the case.

7. Latrine and Garbage Pits

In civilized country, the regular procedure of digging and filling in latrines is essential. In the wilderness this precaution is less necessary, and in rocky country it may be impossible. Remember, however, that you must go back in the bush 100 yards from any site for toilet facilities.

Burn garbage whenever possible. Dispose of tin cans and unburnable trash under logs or rocks back in the bush 100 yards from any campsite.

Never leave any refuse of any kind on any campsite or trail.

8. Dishwashing and Sterilizing

By the end of any meal in which cooking utensils and eating gear have been used, water should be boiling in the largest pail for sterilizing purposes and soapy water should be hot in another pot for washing dishes.
