If you are a non-resident buy the annual license, it covers spouse and children, the 7 day doesn't. annual License is $52.00 this year. This amounts to $32.70 USD at today's rate. I always exchange $1000 USD at border and this would give me about $1590 Canadian (todays exchange)for the trip and no arguments about exchange. Some expenses can be credit carded such as gas and groceries, your bank will figure exchange at the time of purchase, and they are always right on. Do not take a fist full of US dollars along and expect to get proper exchange, it won't happen. I don't fault the Canadian Merchants for this, as they have costs in converting your dollars in their accounts. It is just easier all around to spend their money while there, and convert it back at the border when you return and stop to recover your GST.
